Palpitation

WHAT ARE PALPITATIONS?
Heart Palpitations are simply an awareness of one’s heartbeat. This could be felt as
  • a forceful heartbeat, but not fast
  • a rapid heartbeat
  • an irregular heartbeat, or
  • a skipped beat / dropped beat
WHAT IS THE CAUSE?
They could be due to
  • ectopics
  • supraventricular tachycardia
  • ventricular tachycardia
  • atrial fibrillation
  • high blood pressure
ECTOPICS
These are isolated irregular beats. They can originate from the upper chamber (atria) or lower chamber (ventricle). They can occur in normal hearts or diseased hearts.
When all other tests show that the structure and function of the heart is normal, these are benign and do not need further treatment.
If other tests show that the heart is enlarged or weak in function, then these are signs that the person is at risk of sudden cardiac death or cardiac arrest.
