Fainting

Fainting is temporary loss of consciousness. The scientific term for fainting is syncope.

Syncope may be due to heart or brain conditions

Brain conditions
  1. Stroke
  2. Brain tumour
  3. Epilepsy (Seizure)
  4. Brain trauma (concussion)
  5. Drugs which cause sedation
Heart conditions
  1. Excessively slow heart rate
  2. Excessively fast heart rate
  3. Low blood pressure
  4. Narrowed heart valve (aortic stenosis)
  5. Thick heart muscle (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)
  6. Blood clot to the lung (pulmonary embolus)
It is important to rule out serious conditions of the heart and brain because fainting is only a warning symptom. Correction of the underlying condition may save the patient’s life.
